Video story (and an $ update)

The Direct Drive (fall 2016) at Brock is going well, with $1100 raised above our “budgeted/hoped” amount. This will benefit the playground fundraising. And a $2000 donation from a non Brock (but Vancouver public school supporting family with young university kids!) was received November 20, 2016. Thank you!

Here’s the video about our project (which helped us make the top 5 of 500 entries) for BCAA Play Here). You can refer people here as you discuss our upcoming gala auction prizes:

If everyone can give a push to ask friends/associates to donate to the playground (only $42,000 to go!), or contribute awesome silent auction items to our spring Gala (March 4, 2017 at Mountainview Celebration Hall), that would be great!

Thank you BCAA for $20,000 – Donate now to help get the $48,000 more we need!

After a busy 30 days of inspiring people to vote in the social media contest, we were thrilled to find out that we were 3rd and that Global TV and BCAA had rounded up enough money so that the 2 first place schools received $100,000 each and the 3 remaining finalists got $20,000! That’s us!

We have work yet to do, as we need to reach $90,000 to have sufficient funds to buy the 3 sturdy and unique Kompan playground pieces and do the site prep and finishing.

You can donate now at the links available here! All donations will be acknowledged, we will love you up on social media, and you can get a tax receipt too for donations > $20.

We made Top 5 Finalist in

It’s been a huge few weeks for General Brock, as we made top 5 finalist in the BCAA Play Here Playground grant contest. On May 30, 2016, we were announced as a top 5 (of 500) entries, the only Vancouver school in the finals! Now we need *daily votes* from everyone BC resident, 18+ via FB, Tw, Google and email. This means, if you have all 4 channels set up, you can vote 4x a day!

After falling to 5th, we moved into semi-solid 3rd on Sunday June 5.

If we are successful with the grant, we will win $70,000 to finish the playground. We have saved (with donations received from families, 2 businesses, and a whole lot of garage sales, Brock Boutique fundraising, Burger+Brew nights to date) $20,000. So thank you for making our application so appealing: feasibility and community-support were part of the criteria.

You can still make donations to our playground fund during June 2016! We will funnel all unneeded funds to General Brock PAC or another school needing help.

** Please vote TODAY and EVERY DAY at for General Brock! (til June 29, 2016)

Playing and Active Kids = Happy Kids

Playing is important. Playing is fun. Playing is critical to learning. Playing should be for everyone.

In the summer of 2014, the intermediate kids’ playground at the south end of General Brock Elementary was torn down. And sadly, August 2015, half of the primary kids’ playground was also torn down. The Vancouver School Board has been removing aging playgrounds, but with no plans or support to replace them. It is up to each individual school and community to fund and manage installation of the replacement.

What the space looks like now

The Brock playground is by no means alone in this problem, but it is the one in our community and we have a goal to get the kids playing again. Knowing this demolition was on the horizon, we submitted a proposal in April 2012 to the Vancouver School Board for a new play space. The school board has approved our plan and we have begun fundraising for this project.

We have been raising funds through direct donation, school and community events. We have already (as of Jan 2016) raised $20,000 from donations from Brock families, corporate sponsors, and fundraising. We have, however, a way to go to reach the $89,500 needed.

To get the kids playing again, we need help from community partners and businesses. Help us help the kids!
